Mother can’t bring herself to visit her child’s grave

PARENTS whose children are buried in Bohernabreena graveyard have said that the council are “not listening” to their concerns surrounding grass cutting, after finding their children’s graves covered in grass once again this week.

As reported in The Echo last week, a number of families have said they feel South Dublin County Council are “disrespecting” the graves of those buried in the cemetery and have taken to the Bohernabreena Graveyard Facebook to express their concerns.

One mother, whose baby is buried in Bohernabreena, has said she is unable to visit her baby’s grave due to the damage caused by grass cutting.

She told The Echo: “The past three times I have been up there, the grave has been covered and destroyed by the grass.

“I can’t even clean it, the stones have turned grey and green because of the grass, they’ll have to be replaced.

“At this point, I can’t even bring myself to go over to it until the stones are replaced, it’s so upsetting.

“I just really hope this doesn’t keep up. Another mother has had the whole fence of her baby’s grave damaged, and the walkway around the graves is destroyed as well.

“There’s also lots of stuff getting robbed from the graves. I’m fed up with it all. I just wish there was a bit more respect shown, they’re just not listening.”

Another mother, who visits the graveyard on a regular basis and spoke to The Echo last week about the grass cutting, said she is starting to “dread” going to the cemetery.

She said: “I went to the graveyard to see it destroyed again. I walk by the baby plot every day, and walking along the pathway I had to ensure I didn’t slip.

“I’m starting to dread going up there, there are so many families upset about this.”

South Dublin County Council previously confirmed to The Echo that it is currently in the process of preparing the cemetery for the Bohernabreena Cemetery Annual Mass, which will be held on Sunday, June 19.

A spokesperson for South Dublin County Council said: This matter has been brought to our attention and South Dublin County Council will carry out a full review of operations and maintenance in Bohernabreena Cemetery.
