Musicians to perform for Helping Homeless group
A HOST of local musicians will perform at an uplifting busk outside the Tower Credit Union in Clondalkin village this Saturday, May 6, at 7.30pm in aid of Clondalkin Helping Homeless.
The event has been organised by musician Colm Gavin, who is from Clondalkin, in his role as a WhyHunger: Artists Against Poverty and Hunger ambassador.
Colm was appointed an ambassador for the US-based charity after he performed in Boston last year, and other ambassadors for the charity include Bruce Springsteen, Chicago and Yoko Ono.
The line-up for the inaugural Clondalkin WhyHunger busk includes Zeinab, Leah Barniville, Sinead McConville, D Cullen, Aengus Devine and Jordan O’Neill.
Colm Gavin told The Echo: “I’m a firm believer in the practicality of music being one of its main facets.
“We rattle a guitar and bang on a drum in the hopes you’ll drop a coin into the hat and the hatful of coins feeds the hungry – it’s a very simple exchange.
“WhyHunger is a USA-based charity, I and others are just applying their principles in aid of our own food banks locally.”
While there is no target for the amount of money the performers are hoping to raise on the day for Clondalkin Helping Homeless, the performers hope that the community will give generously.
“WhyHunger is effectively one massive food bank, and services smaller food banks and drives across the United States,” explained Colm.
“Clondalkin Helping Homeless is a food bank in its essence, although it provides a number of other services that individuals I know personally have benefited from.
“While there are wonderful food banks countrywide doing great work, I’m a firm believer that charity begins at home.”
Clondalkin Helping Homeless runs a weekly food bank at Bawnogue Community Centre, delivers FoodCloud to people in need, and provides tents and sleeping bags to people sleeping rough.
