New era in planning

LAST week saw the beginning of a new era in planning for the Clondalkin area.

Students from Moyle Park College, Coláiste Bríde, Coláiste Chillian, Scoil Áine, and Sacred Heart Sruleen collaborated with South Dublin County Council as part of the preparation of a new Local Area Plan for the area.

Led by Ms Tracy McGibbon, a planner in the Council, the event delved into various aspects of urban planning, with a sharp focus on the needs and perspectives of the younger generation to help shape a proposed new plan for the area.

As students pored over maps of the area, discussions ensued regarding transportation infrastructure and the daily commute to school. Ideas were exchanged on enhancing social spaces tailored to teenagers and preserving green areas like parks, including Corcagh Park.

Under the guidance of council planners, students broke into small groups to brainstorm innovative solutions and suggest practical initiatives for the betterment of Clondalkin.

Their enthusiasm and ingenuity shone through as they passionately debated and envisioned a brighter future for their community, according to Moyle Park College (MPC).

The event was hosted by Ms Leigh Ellis and the Moyle Park College Student Council and exemplified the power of youth engagement in local governance and urban planning, according to MPC.

“By integrating the voices of young people, the conversation evolved into a collaborative effort to shape the very fabric of Clondalkin’s landscape,” said MPC.

The involvement of these student councils underlines their commitment to civic responsibility and highlights the importance of intergenerational collaboration in sustainable development, MPC continued.

“As the students await the implementation of their suggestions, the future of Clondalkin appears promising, buoyed by the collective aspirations and determination of its youth,” said MPC.

This collaboration serves as “a beacon of hope”, signalling “a new era” where the ideas and concerns of young citizens are heard and incorporated into the decision-making processes that shape their communities, according to MPC.

“As Clondalkin embarks on this journey towards progress and inclusivity, the invaluable contributions of its youth are poised to leave an indelible mark on its landscape for generations to come by being part of the early preparation of the new Clondalkin Local Area Plan!,” said MPC.
