New works at The Bungalow will allow wheelchair access

FOR the past 26 years, The Bungalow in Cherry Orchard has provided the people of Ballyfermot the opportunity to meet new people, use its helpful services and take part in adult education.

In the coming weeks, The Bungalow is set to undergo some new works which will see the building become wheelchair accessible for the first time in its history.

As a result of the works, classes and services in the community driven centre will be accessible to even more members of the community and will enhance the facilities for those who have been attending The Bungalow for the past 26 years.

Marie Delaney, co-ordinator with The Bungalow, spoke to The Echo about the work that will take place, and how it will benefit those in the local Ballyfermot community.

Marie told The Echo: “The Bungalow has been here for 26 years, and in those years it has morphed from a small residential unit with several extensions built on to it.

“In all those years, the entrance to the building has never been wheelchair accessible. The work will extend the front of the building and the lobby area, and will also enhance the coffee dock.

“We’re delighted that the work is starting. It’s due to start in the next few days, and is expected to take four to six weeks.
“Our classes are usually held during term time, so we’re quieter at this time of year. The work will be completed in time for classes.

“In the past, some people have been prevented from taking part in classes due to the lack of wheelchair access, so this will make them more accessible to everyone.

“We’ll be hoping that more people will now take part in the classes due to this, and our open day will take place in September for everyone to enrol and find out more information.”

The Bungalow open day will take place on Wednesday, September 7 from 10am to 3pm, with more information about the Bungalow and the services it provides available on The Bungalow Facebook page.
