On This Day in 1984: Ballyfermot residents fight water charges

Some may think water charges are a new thing in Ireland, but attempts in the 80s and 90s were made to bring in a payment for water as part of a local service charge package.

In 1984 the RTE ‘Today Tonight’ programme travelled to Ballyfermot to speak to locals about the proposed introduction of service charges.

These charges were expected to cover such things as water and waste collection, but many felt they were being unfairly introduced at the time.

Some protestors at the time were also concerned about the increase in the general cost of living, with some seeking an agreement that any cost would have to be set and not allowed to increase over time.

The report was broadcast on April 18, 1984.
