Peamount rehabilitation unit is recognised with the Healthcare Excellence Award

PEAMOUNT Healthcare’s new rehabilitation unit was recognised for the work they delivered to patients during Covid.

The group were finalists at the Healthcare Excellence Awards 2021 and were presented with a certificate in the ‘Innovation in Service Delivery’ category.

It recognises the achievement of the team in the set up and delivery of a specialist Level 2 Neuro Rehabilitation service during a pandemic.

This is the first unit of its kind supporting the implementation of the rehabilitation strategy through a managed clinical rehabilitation network of key stakeholders across acute, community and primary care, integration in action.

The unit is funded through Dublin Midlands Hospital Group from HSE Acute Strategy & Planning.

Meanwhile, the Neurogical Alliance of Ireland (NAI), of which Peamount Healthcare are a member, called for investment into the sector in the upcoming Budget.

NAI say Covid has created “the perfect storm” on neurological care services already “critically under-resourced pre-pandemic”, aggravated by “spiralling” waiting lists which are at their worst ever levels.

The majority of its members operate in the not for profit sector, and report challenges that are further exacerbated by long waiting times and lack of access to care for people living with neurological conditions across Ireland.

“Action must be taken now to introduce an immediate programme of emergency investment in neurological care services to address a crisis that has been worsened by the impact of Covid,” said NAI, in a report published in August.

The group are also calling for investment in neurorehabilitation services to implement the 2019-2021 framework for the National Neurorehabilitation Strategy in line with the commitment in the current Programme for Government.
