Phoenix Folk Club rises from the ashes

The Phoenix Folk Club returned to Ballyfermot last week with a special performance from folk legend Jimmy Crowley.

Crowley, best known for his interpretation of folk songs from his native Cork, was joined by his partner Eve Telford, who performed songs from their latest album.

On the night, support was provided by local musician Derek Copley who sang  his own songs and some folk songs also.

The Phoenix Folk Club was a staple of the Dublin folk scene of the 1980s, with top acts like Mary Black, Andy Irvine and Christy Moore among others all performing.

After a few attempts over the years, the folk club is now back up and running, in its original home, upstairs in Downey’s pub in Ballyfermot.

Long-time organiser of the club and champion of live music, Mick Coakley, told the audience “It’s great to be back and to be able to host live folk music at the club. The Phoenix has risen once again!”

The next event will take place in January with a special guest to be announced.
