Railings will help stop stolen cars wrecking Tymon Park

THERE are plans for railings to be installed at the Castletymon Road entrance to Tymon Park from the roundabout and down to the depot, to prevent people driving stolen cars from accessing the park.

The topic was discussed at Monday’s monthly meeting of the Tallaght Area Committee, with Leo Magee, a senior engineer from South Dublin County Council, outlining the proposal.

“We’re proposing to install a railing along the Castletymon Road entrance from the roundabout, down to the depot,” said Mr Magee.

“It’s an area where stolen cars have been getting in in the past, and what we’re hoping is that, while ideally the main gate will keep these stolen cars out, if they do get in, they’d then have to face that railing which would then be a second means of keeping them out.”

As reported in The Echo last October, joyriders caused extensive damage to pitches used by Tallaght Rugby Club in Tymon Park and then burnt out the cars in another section of the park.

In a Facebook post from Tallaght Rugby Club the day after the incident happened, the sports club wrote: “Two stolen cars recklessly driven across our Tymon pitch then burned out.

“We need more done to protect our playing grounds…a fence/barrier perhaps? It’s not fair on our club and local community.”

The proposal for a fence to prevent this issue happening again is a welcome development, according to Independent councillor Mick Duff, who is also the chairperson of the Tallaght Area Committee.

Speaking at the meeting this week, Cllr Duff said to Mr Magee: “I’m delighted to see that you did promise and you’re delivering on Tymon Park for the railings going down towards the depot.

“That’ll be greatly appreciated by the sportspeople and everybody who uses the park, in the hope that we can prevent further incursions by cars causing damage.”

Cllr Duff also praised the importance of the park in the community and described it as “one of the prides of the county”.

“It’s an important park to us,” he said, “and a lot of people put a lot of hard work into it.”
