Sean Walsh car park closed until November

THE Sean Walsh car park and bottle bank has been temporarily closed to facilitate work on the 81-unit social housing project at Whitestown Way.

Works on The Weir housing project for older persons have been delayed by Covid restrictions.

However, it is now anticipated that the units, being delivered by Clúid Housing in partnership with South Dublin County Council, will be complete by the end of 2023.

Plans include an upgrade to the entrance of Sean Walsh Park from Whitestown Way and an upgrade to the existing carpark.

According to South Dublin County Council, following discussions an updated layout for this area has been agreed which include these upgrades and additional landscaping works.

The additional landscaping works will be between the Whitestown Way stream and the Southern boundary of the development.

The council said that these upgrades will ‘ensure that vehicular movements and cycle and pedestrian permeability are facilitated and enhanced upon completion of the development’.

To facilitate the proposed landscape work, public access to the Sean Walsh car park has been closed off until the end of the year.

The existing kissing gate has been relocated a short distance up the road and will continue to provide pedestrian access to the park and Old Bawn Community School.

The bottle bank located within this area of the park will also be temporarily removed for the duration of works.

Nearby bottle banks include The Square Shopping Centre, council head offices, Tallaght Leisure Centre, Killinarden Heights council housing maintenance and the car park at Aherne’s.

When contacted by The Echo, a council spokesperson said: “The car park at Sean Walsh Park is closed to the public to facilitate the completion of the Cluid housing project.

“It is expected that it will remain closed until late in the year, possibly November.

“It has been necessary to remove the glass recycling bring banks from the car park, signage has been erected informing the public of the nearest alternative glass recycling locations.

“The council hopes to reinstate the glass recycling facility at Sean Walsh Park once the car park re-opens.”

Full access to the Sean Walsh car park and surrounding upgraded landscaped areas will be available to the public once works complete.
