Rubbish set on fire in laneway close to houses

ISSUES with an anti-social behaviour in Palmerstown “come in waves”, according to a local councillor, after a fire was lit in a laneway at Oakcourt Grove/Wheatfield Road on Tuesday night, while eggs were thrown at houses on Turret Road earlier that evening.
It is believed that illegal dumping was occurring in the laneway, and that this waste was then set alight just before 11pm on Tuesday night and Dublin Fire Brigade was notified, while at 9.40pm on the same day a group was spotted throwing eggs at houses on Turret Road and gardai were notified.

Speaking to The Echo about these issues, Independent councillor for Palmerstown-Fonthill, Alan Hayes, said: “These are things that come in waves.
“There’s been a series of illegal dumping incidents in laneways in recent months. The waste isn’t getting collected quickly enough and it’s being set alight.
“Lighting fires is extremely dangerous – it can damage trees, garages, it can cause damage to properties and it could even lead to loss of life.
“As a community, we really need to revisit the idea that certain laneways need to be gated.
“We can’t continue with a situation where the council is spending €1.3m on cleaning up illegal dumping.”
Eggs were thrown at houses on Turret Road earlier that night, and in previous years an elderly person got injured when they fell off a ladder while trying to clean egg residue from their windows.
Cllr Hayes added: “There’s groups of young teens who think it’s funny to egg people’s houses, it’s obviously connected to the summer holidays and kids entertaining themselves.
“It’s not harmless fun – we had an elderly person who fell off a ladder two years ago while cleaning egg from their windows.
“We haven’t had any issues with it in a while, but the egg throwing seems to have started again.
“We’re asking residents, if they notice anything, to report it to the guards and then they will know to patrol the area.”
