A FOOTBALL match to support the annual Ballyfermot Relay for Life event, took place over the weekend.

The Patty McGarry Memorial Cup at Le Fanu Park helped raised funds towards the 24-hour running relay fixture, which is set to take place in August.

Cherry Orchard brothers Wayne, Daniel and Kevin McGarry, started the initiative in 2013 to honour their mother Patty McGarry, who passed away that year after suffering from a cancer-related illness.

Relay events celebrate the lives of cancer survivors, remembering those lost to the disease and raise awareness of research and support services for the Irish Cancer Society.

“It was a fantastic day, the sun was shining and game was very competitive,” said Daniel McGarry, Chairman of Relay For Life Ballyfermot.

“It was contested between two teams made of lads I played schoolboy football with, and lads I played senior football with from Ballyfermot United.

“This was the second year of the match and it didn’t let us down. It had slips, great skills and even some great goals. The senior team led by captain Jason O’Neill – who was a high help in putting this day on – were victorious and won the Patty McGarry Memorial Cup.

“All in all, it was a great day and helped raise some extra funds for our main Relay event on August 3/4.”

Ballyfermot Relay has raised over €100,000 in the last six years for the Irish Cancer Society.
