Rovers’ Amputee team shine at home and away

IT HAS been an eventful couple of weeks for the Shamrock Rovers Amputee soccer team.

After lifting the Sean McCaffrey Foundation Cup in Monaghan, they travelled to Munich to line out at FuBballiade 2019 in which they finished runners-up to Bohemians.

Rovers faced off against FC Hoffenheim and Newcastle United over six matches, claiming a 2-1 win over the German side in their opener before beating their Tyneside opponents on all three counts.

A further draw and a narrow loss to Hoffenheim capped off two fine days of tournament football for the Hoops.

This fine run of games saw Rovers progress to the final when they came up against  Dublin rivals Bohemians who ran out 2-0 winners.

Speaking after the games Manager Stuart McSweeney said “We tested ourselves against two great sides from around Europe and the players responded brilliantly.”

“The level of our performances was really good and the German Federation for amputee football was very complimentary of our standards on and off the pitch.

“I am very proud of what this group is delivering on the pitch. To play 10 games in two days and show those sort of fitness levels is remarkable.”

Shamrock Rovers return to league action in two weeks time in Galway where they will come back up against Bohemians and Cork City.
