South Dublin Council to discuss security concerns with local clubs

SOUTH DUBLIN COUNTY Council is prepared to meet representatives from Lucan Harriers and Weston Hockey Club to discuss security concerns after a series of break-ins to cars in the car park.

Motions were tabled at this week’s Lucan Area Committee meeting of SDCC by Councillors Liona O’Toole and William Lavelle in relation to CCTV in the car park.

Cllr O’Toole’s motion requested the CEO to “to further examine the introduction of CCTV” at the car park. Cllr Lavelle’s motion requested the CEO to “present a report on the operation and monitoring of CCTV in place on the clubhouse” and to “immediately carry-out pruning and removal of hedging around the northern part of the car park.”

The council replied that seven new lighting columns had been installed in the car park as part of the 2016 Public Realm Improvement Works Programme after a previous spate of break-ins.

The Council said that it would not be possible to instal CCTV “in every situation where such problems exist” as the cost would be prohibitive and there is no guarantee of success.

They said that practical measures which can be employed in this car park include the thinning of vegetation and the work will be done in the coming year.

The council added: “There are three existing CCTV cameras on the clubhouse building and despite their presence car break-ins do occur. The council is unaware of the ownership of the cameras and their condition but would be available to meet the club[s] to explore options that may be available to them in this regard”.
