St Mark’s U13s claim league crown

CARLA Kelly struck 4-4 to help St Mark’s to the Under 13 Division Nine Ladies Football League title, with an emphatic 6-17 to 2-3 victory over O’Toole’s on the final day of the season reports Hayden Moore.

In their first competitive season, the young guns from Mark’s maintained their prolific form to win all seven of the league games in style and claim silverware at the first time of asking.

The midfield pairing of Grace Green and Abigail Byrne proved pivotal to Mark’s getting past O’Toole’s at Páirc Uí Thuathaill on June 25.

Giving one of her standout performances of the entire season, Green assisted several scores and covered every blade of grass with her phenomenal work rate.

Green utilised her excellent ability to read the game to carve several opportunities for her teammates while Byrne pushed a high tempo with her hard running and direct ball into the forward line.

It was this strong base that enabled Carla Kelly to run riot at half-forward, notching up a personal tally of 4-4 – dispatching a superb penalty in the first half for one of her goals.

Beside her in half-forward, Layla Murphy also chipped in with an incredible goal from distance, the ball dropping just under the crossbar into the top corner.

While the game was just a sample of the firepower the team possesses, it is the solid defence which gives their forward teammates the freedom in the final third.

Both Debbie Adesoye and Holly Doyle have been powerhouses in the half-back line, with the team only conceding 40 points across their seven league games.

True to form, very little got past Doyle and Adesoye against O’Toole’s with the dominant duo putting in a horde of blocks and tackles to take the Tallaght team across the line.
