SUCKING DUBLIN: 20 year old play returns to Civic

A GROUP of young English, drama and performing arts students and graduates from Tallaght are set to make their mark in their performance of Enda Walsh’s ‘Sucking Dublin’.

Freshly Ground Theatre is a Tallaght-based theatre collective that first formed in 2014, and they’re bringing their performance of Enda Walsh’s play, which explores addiction, aggression and being young in Dublin in 1997, to the Civic Theatre.

Megan Thompson, who is directing the play alongside Vlad Gurdis, explained how the play was chosen by the group: “We are all fans of Enda Walsh.

“This play came up a lot during drama school, so we all know it and love it.

“The characters are our own age, so we don’t have to act older.”

‘Sucking Dublin’ looks at a variety of themes that were affecting young people in Dublin in the late ’90s, Megan added: “It’s set in 1997 and now it’s 20 years later, so we were very interested in the overall themes in the play, things like domestic violence and drugs.

“It’s surprising that how little change there seems to have been.”

When asked about how the play will be presented to a modern audience, Megan said: “we keep it set in the ’90s but we add our own modern twist.”

The play will run from April 6 to 8, tickets are €12 and are available online at civictheatre.ie or by phone on 01 462 7477.

The play contains violence, strong language, drug references and sexual references.
