The Night Belongs To Us: Free artist showcase event took place in Arás Chrónáin
Free artist showcase events “open for young performers” for 14–18 year olds took place from April 19–30 throughout Clondalkin, Lucan, and Tallaght.
The first event was performed in Aras Chronain in Clondalkin on April 19, Griffeen Youth Centre in Lucan on April 26, and finally, the Loft in Tallaght Library on April 30.
Artists included Sadbh Keane, Amber-Lilly Maher, Aisling Weafer, Maria O’Neill, Ace 41, and Alexandra Vozza Di Vito.
According to SDCC Arts spokesperson Gerry Horan, the programme was originally a “pilot initiative” 20 years ago that was funded by the department, with its mission being to give young people based around the area a platform to express themselves through music.
South Dublin County was one of four counties to receive funding over the summer, which contributed to the performances this year, which were in the works since September.
The organisation of these events was made challenging by the fact that they were not performing in “traditional venues” like concert halls but instead in community centres and libraries, as they were worried they may not get many people to come see them.
‘The Night Belongs to Us’ has hosted approximately 200 performances as of writing, with the programme having been successful thanks to local DJs helping to develop “really talented” young performers and the assistance of the Contact Studio in Rua Red.
As regards what’s next for the SDCC Arts office, they will continue hosting events and exhibiting music, theater, and film.
For their help and support with the programme, Gerry would like to thank SubSounds, Contact Studio, Music Generation South Dublin, and generally anyone who has invested in the programme over the years.
