Three evictions carried out by council and more planned
SOUTH Dublin County Council carried out three evictions last week, and more evictions are scheduled in the coming weeks.
According to the council, the evictions last week were carried out on households that had “substantial arrears” and included mortgaged and council-owned rented properties.
“There are other evictions scheduled for the coming weeks,” a spokesperson for South Dublin County Council told The Echo.
“The council currently have a number of properties in arrears going through their legal process, of these, almost 100 properties have had legal proceedings initiated and the occupiers are seriously at risk of losing their When asked what action the council carried out to assist tenants before evictions were applied, the council said a “sympathetic approach” is taken by their Debt Management Unit.
As reported in The Echo last October, over €8m in arrears was owed South Dublin County Council.
“The council’s Debt Management Unit takes a sympathetic approach towards tenants and customers who find themselves in arrears and work tirelessly to assist customers who engage constructively in reducing their arrears,” they stated.
The Echo asked whether there was a specific threshold or level of arrears tenants had to reach before evictions were considered, but the council said there was not.
“There is no specific threshold, nor is there a specific time frame that initiates legal proceedings,” they said.
“Each account is considered individually and on its own merits.
“However, customers who fail to engage constructively with the council to reduce their arrears leave the council with no other option but to seek possession of their property.”
