Tree-mendous: Pupils from Tallaght school prepare ground for new forest
Phase 2 of a school forest planting project, which was started in May, recently took place in Tallaght Community National School in Jobstown.
In May the whole school in Tallaght Community National School – children, teachers and parents, came together to prepare the ground and the soil for planting.
This was done in conjunction with Stepping Stone Forest Volunteers.
The group laid down cardboard and bark on the ground in May to kill off the grass and weeds. The volunteers returned with the trees which were to be planted.
“I am very grateful to Stepping Stone Forests, John and the volunteers for organising and arranging this project. From start to finish they have been extremely professional and the end product is a testament to their hard work,” said Tallaght Community National School principal Conor McCarthy.
“We are lucky to have such spacious, natural grounds in our school. We have an area of ancient hedgerow where children can play and learn during the school day.
“Adding these new trees to the hedgerow will ensure it remains a place for local animals to live.
“We are also developing a new pond on school grounds this winter so we are hoping that our school grounds will be a green beacon of diversity in Jobstown for years to come.”
