Trip down memory lane

Trip down memory lane

By William O'Connor

IT WAS a case of reeling in the years when six friends met up at St Maelruain’s for the first time in nearly sixty years last Tuesday morning.

Following an appeal in The Echo last month for the whereabouts of the men in the photograph, they met up at St Maelruain’s for a reunion photograph and to reminisce about their shared pasts.

The photo in question was taken around 1959 when they were aged around 19 or 20, and included Enda Mulally, Gerard Kavanagh, Frank Gallagher, Brendan Gallagher, Tony Gallagher and Tom Dunne.

“It was brilliant to meet up with the lads, it is over sixty years when we last met up and we had great fun, banter and shared loads of memories,”.

Enda now lives in Palmerstown and played with Tallaght club Newtown Rangers, while Gerard, also played for Newtown, lives in Clondalkin.

Frank, a member and former captain of Old County Pitch and Putt Club, lives in Rossmore in Templeogue, while Brendan from Bancroft, who also played for Newtown, was, with his brother, one of the founder members.

Tony, who now lives in Ballyboden, moved to South Africa for five years in the ’60s, while Tom Dunne, who now lives in St Maelruain’s, played in goal for Newtown Rangers for a number of years.

Meanwhile brothers Tony and Frank are looking to see if they are the oldest twins from Tallaght. Nobody can recall who took the original photograph.
