Unexpected passing of community stalwart leaves family in shock

THE community of Jobstown suffered a big loss this week following the sudden passing of Maeve Duff Cox following a brief illness.

Originally from Ballyfermot, 53-year-old Maeve was known throughout Jobstown for her work over the past 12 years with the Jobstown community centre, St Thomas’s parish, the JADD project and most recently with the all-weather pitch.

Maeve was laid to rest on Wednesday this week in Palmerstown cemetery following a Mass in the Church of St Thomas the Apostle and has been fondly remembered by her family following her passing.

Maeve’s daughter Lynne spoke to The Echo about her mother, who she called an “amazing person”.

She said: “My mam was a jolly and loving person, very caring. She would take the time to help anybody and to listen to anybody.

“It was very sudden, she went to the doctor thinking she had a chest infection, which turned out to be pneumonia and she passed away on Saturday.

“It’s a big loss to my family, my kids Lee and Sophie are devastated. She was like a second mammy to them. She was an amazing person – a best friend, a nanny, a daughter, a partner and a mother.

“My mam worked in the community for the past 12 years. Beginning in the Jobstown community centre, she also worked briefly with JADD, and has worked with the church and most recently with the Astro all-weather pitch.

Her daughter added that her mother had saved a young man’s life on the Astro in 2009 after he took a heart attack. Maeve used the defibrillator that she had only just received training in.

“She’s very well-known throughout the Jobstown community, and all of her involvement with the community throughout the years has been linked together. I just can’t believe she’s gone.”

Maeve is remembered by her daughter Lynne, her grandchildren Lee and Sophie, her partner Paddy, her father Desmond and her brothers, sisters and her extended family, along with her friends, and her beloved dog Millie.
