THE Viking Drum Corps last weekend beat off stiff competition at a national marching band competition to bring the All Ireland title home to Tallaght.

This is the sixth time in eight years that the local drumming troupe has been crowned All Ireland champs, with the corps currently sitting seventh in Europe.

The Viking Drum Corps is one of the competitive units of the Tallaght Marching Band, which was formed in the past 18 months after the Tallaght Youth Band and Tallaght Festival Band merged.

Last Sunday, the Vikings, which has around 35 members, competed in Limerick for the All Ireland Marching Band title, in the European premier class.

The competition was run by the Irish Marching Band Association as part of the Celtic Band Festival.

The corps, which includes drums, bass and colour guards, performed a piece called Into the Woods, which included three original pieces of music composed by the Tallaght side.

Speaking with The Echo after the win, Mick Thompson, co-chairperson of Tallaght Marching Band said: “We’re all ecstatic with the win.

“It’s the culmination of all of our hard work, hundreds of hours are put into this every year.

“We’re elated . . . and looking forward to the year ahead.”

The Vikings will now take a short break before competing in the Drum Corps United Kingdom Finals and the Drum Corps European Finals this September.

The band is also looking forward to travelling to the Rose of Tralee Festival in August.

Tallaght Marching Band is always looking for new members of all ages, with children invited to join the cadet unit. For further details email info.tallaghtmarchingband.com or follow Tallaght Marching Band on Facebook.
