Words Are Always There: Cliodhna Brooks talks about her love of writing
Writing has always been one of the most important things in my life, writes Cliodhna Brooks.
Words are always there to translate into a beautiful or miserable story, a thrilling article or something completely new and never seen before.
I will always be gratefull for my ability to read and write, as I have always viewed it as a safe place.
Being able to assemble meaningless words into what you dream of, what your nightmares are made of and everything in between. It is a beautiful gift that no one can take away from me which I am so privileged to possess.
Any problem I face I will always turn to my pen and paper. How lyrics and stories can affect people and their emotions so drastically has fascinated me since I understood how to read.
Taylor Swift is one of the best writers in the world today. Her beautiful poetry merged with her individual experiences cutting into you like a knife. She is a huge inspiration for young people, especially female, writers and musicians because of her lyrical and emotional genius.
Similarly, the Irish singer/songwriter Hozier is a fantastic lyricist whom I have admired since I heard his first song. The way he incorporates reality into fiction is truly unbelievable. Listening to his lyrics highlights the vague words but deep sentiments used.
Although, there is nothing I appreciate more than a real-life article. I love how in hundreds of years, people will discover our current newspapers and read about our history and how our world works. It is so important to write about things that are happening around us as we speak.
I love reading people’s personal input about issues and I love to educate myself on other people’s views. A quote by author Neil Gaiman reads; “This is how you do it: you sit down at a keyboard, and you put one word after another until it’s done. It’s that easy, and that hard.”
One of my favourite pieces of writing ever is the poem ‘And Yet the Books’ by Czeslaw Milosz. In the poem, he explains how trends have come and gone, empires have risen and fallen, planets have spun on and yet the books have stayed.
Books are still being written and read. Books are still here through every war, every disaster and every other obstacle history has thrown. The art of writing could never be destroyed, for there is nothing greater than the written word. It allows our minds to explore and discover and wonder and create. It allows us to explore depths like nothing else can.
It doesn’t matter what happens in the world, writing will continue to grow and expand even in today’s modern world in texting, song writing, and scriptwriting. The never-ending continuation of writing will always inspire me to write, create and dream.
