Work could start on new Lucan swimming pool by next April

Construction on the long-awaited Lucan swimming pool could start next April, The Echo has learned.

At this week’s Lucan area committee meeting of South Dublin County Council, Councillor Danny O’Brien asked for an update on the Lucan Swimming Pool.

He added: “Has the project gone out to tender? If it has when are tenders due to be back? When will building work start on the pool?”

The Council replied: “The architect’s report was presented at the September Council meeting and the Part 8 approved by Council. The tender documents are now in preparation and it is envisaged that tenders will be sought in February of next year with a view to starting on site in April 2018.

“The duration of the contract on site will be in the region of 15 to 18 months.”

Last July, The Echo reported that the cost of the swimming pool has risen from €10 million to €13 million. SDCC look set to foot the extra €3 million bill.

Located in Griffeen Valley Park, the main pool will be on three levels and the smaller pool will have a moveable floor so it can be used by people with reduced mobility.

The complex will also have a gym, a new Exercise and Training Centre, and a café.
