280 thefts from cars in Tallaght since the start of year

THERE has been 280 thefts from cars in the Tallaght area in the first nine months of 2017, a 34 per cent increase on the same period last year. 

At the recent Joint Policing Committee (JPC) meeting for the DMR Southern Division, which includes Tallaght, Rathfarnham, Terenure and Crumlin, the crime stats for the first nine months of this year were compared with figures for the same period in 2016.

According to the figures released, burglaries in Tallaght are down 22 per cent when the first nine months in 2017 are compared with the same period in 2016 – a drop from 311 burglaries to 243.

In Rathfarnham, burglaries are down 3 per cent, a decrease from 216 to 209.

However, robbery from the person, which involves violence or threat of violence, is up ten per cent in Tallaght while in Rathfarnham, theft from the person is up 124 per cent from 14 incidents to 32.

Theft from cars is up 34 per cent in Tallaght, with reported incidents significantly rising from 209 incidents to 280.

While theft from vehicles is down 11 per cent in Rathfarnham, the theft of cars is up 19 per cent from 37 to 44.

Thefts from shops in the Tallaght area are down nine per cent from 363 to 330 however, in Rathfarnham this type of crime is on the up, with reported incidents rising from 142 to 158 – an 11 per cent increase. 

There were 25 robberies from Tallaght establishments, which involved violence or a threat of violence, a drop from 35 for the same period last year, with Rathfarnham down from five violent incidents to three.

Overall across the DMR division, Tallaght, Rathfarnham, Terenure and Crumlin, there have been 223 incidents of drugs for sale or supply to date in 2017, an increase of nine per cent on the same period in 2016 when there were 205.

Possession of drugs for personal use is recorded at 564 so far this year, a decrease from 652 in 2016.

Searches carried out under the Misuse of Drugs Act in 2017 are recorded at 3,328 compared to 3,904 for the same period in 2016. 

According to the figures there were also 161 detections for driving while intoxicated as opposed to 172 in 2016, with 127 incidents of drunkenness recorded to date in 2017 compared to 91 for the same period last year – an increase of 40 per cent.
