€450,000 to fix swimming pool boom at leisure centre
By Mary Dennehy
FIXING the swimming pool at Tallaght Leisure Centre could cost an estimated €450,000, according to South Dublin County Council.
Back in November 2016, The Echo reported on how ongoing problems with the swimming pool’s boom, a mechanical device which is used to divide the pool into areas, was negatively impacting on local swimmers and clubs.

Nearly three years down the line, the boom remains stuck in a permanent upright position, which has stopped 25m swims at the community facility in Jobstown.
In council chambers on Monday, Solidarity councillor Kieran Mahon asked council management for an update on repair work to the pool at Tallaght Leisure Centre.
In its reply, the council said that to date general repairs have been carried out to the boom and moveable floor.
These works are to “ensure the stability” of the boom in the upright position and that the movable floor can continue to be used for classes.
In relation to fixing the problem long-term, the council said: “A complete overhaul of the system would involve emptying the pool to carry out extensive repairs to the floor and boom, which would take 2/3 weeks at an estimated cost of €130,000 to €150,000.
“This would get the pool in Tallaght back to full operational capacity.
“However, there is no guarantee that the repair would last beyond a few years.”
According to the council, the “preferred option” is to tender for a full replacement of the existing system.
However, the estimated cost of a full replacement is €450,000.
“While this would provide a long-term solution which would allow the pool to operate to its full potential, budgetary constraints must be taken into account,” the council said.
“In the interim, 25m swims are available in Clondalkin Leisure Centre.”
The council added that a routine lifting inspection has been carried out in Tallaght Leisure Centre to ensure everything complies with Health and Safety Regulations.
The passenger lift and ropes have been inspected and validated for six months.
The lifting hoist, beside the pool, has to be inspected by an independent body, which has been arranged.
