Abbey secures Senior Cadet title

FOLLOWING on from her success at the All-Ireland Championships earlier in the year, Sacred Heart Boxing Club entered Abbey Molloy into the National Senior Cadet Championships recently and had plenty to smile about.

The Killinarden boxer was last year’s Junior Cadet champion at 42kg which booked her a place on the Irish schoolgirl team representing Ireland at last year’s European Championships in Erzurum, Turkey taking home a bronze medal.

This year at 44kg, Abbey was drawn in the semi-final against Miah Byrne from Setanta Boxing Club in Kildare.

However, Abbey took the bout comfortably with a unanimous 5.0 decision exercising the fundamentals of boxing with precision.

The final, on paper was a much stiffer task facing three times national champion Keely Steven’s from Charlestown Boxing Club in Mayo.

After what was a very close first round, Abbey came into her own in the second and third scoring with the jab and making her opponent miss while scoring with hooks, winning the bout on unanimous 5.0 decision to take the 44kg national senior cadet title.

Abbey now starts training with Team Ireland with the hope of representing Ireland in an international competition before the end of the summer.

The club also have All-Ireland and National Junior Cadet champion Comhghall Guerrine heading off to Poland this week with Team Ireland for a training camp in preparation for the European Championships in Maribor, Slovenia on August 15.
