Adeleke strikes gold in Gyor
By Stephen Leonard
TALLAGHT Athletic Club’s Rhasidat Adeleke scaled new heights as she won gold in the 200m at the European Under 18 Championships in Gyor, Hungary.
The 15-year-old competitor produced a stunning performance that saw her finish in a new personal best time of 23.52 seconds - an achievement that clearly overwhelmed her after she had crossed the line.
Gyor has proven a happy hunting ground for Adeleke who picked up silver in the European Youth Olympics’ 200m there almost a year ago.
Her latest win helped mark a super outing for Team Ireland who carded four medal wins in total, including a double gold for Sarah Healy in the 1500m and 3000m as well as an 800m silver for Sophie O’Sullivan while Patience Jumbo-Gula came home fifth in the 100m Final.
It was enough to see Ireland emerge from these championships seventh on the medal table.
Adeleke came into last weekend’s race on the back of her victory in the 100m at the National Junior Championships in Tullamore, where she clocked 11.83 seconds.
She has also been named in the Ireland 4x100m Relay squad for this week’s IAAF World Under 20 Athletics Championships in Tampere, Finland.
