An Post resumes regular mail deliveries to Mac Uilliam estate

MAIL deliveries to Mac Uilliam are resuming, after incidents of anti-social behaviour last month saw An Post suspend services to the Tallaght estate.
On the morning of June 21, An Post notified its customers in Mac Uilliam that it had suspended mail deliveries following a “number of incidents involving threats to the safety and security of staff”.

In a statement at the time, the company said: “An Post has a clear duty of care to our staff and cannot allow a situation where our staff are put at risk in any way”.
When contacted by The Echo this week, An Post confirmed that it is resuming services following the assistance of local gardai and community leaders.
“An Post is resuming regular mail deliveries to Mac Uilliam estate”, a spokesperson for An Post said.
“Services will remain under review.”
The spokesperson added: “An Post appreciates the assistance of local gardai and community leaders in resolving the issue.
“The key thing here is that An Post feels safe to send people back into the area.
“We are going to resume services but will monitor in the hope that there is no resumption of previous difficulties.”
In an interview with The Echo last week, one Mac Uilliam resident said that An Post’s decision to pull delivery services in the area is the culmination of years of anti-social behaviour that has not been tackled.
Dublin South West TD Sean Crowe (Sinn Fein) has made a recommendation to the elected members of south Dublin County Council that a task force be established to respond to ongoing challenges within the estate.
Deputy Crowe believes that the task force could be made up of South Dublin County Council, voluntary housing associations based in the area, local gardai, elected reps and community members.
“[An Post suspending services] is just one symptom of the challenges being faced”, Deputy Crowe said.
“I think if we collectively put our heads together we can work out solutions, work out what the local authority can do to help, what the gardai can do.
“We need to do something to respond to the challenges being faced by residents… and in a timely manner.”
