THE first leader of Operation Transformation 2021 was revealed to be Andrew Burke-Hannon (32), from Clondalkin.

RTE presenter Kathryn Thomas surprised Andrew with the news during a doorstep visit to his home on Saturday 2 January.

The former St Kevin’s Community College student told Kathryn the support of the programme was “unbelievable” and he is looking forward to the challenge of getting fitter and healthier in the weeks ahead.

Andrew met his husband Jason on Grindr and got married in 2016.

Although the couple lived in Jason’s native Carlow at first, they eventually moved back to Clondalkin where they live in Andrew’s childhood home with his parents, Patricia and Denis.

Covid has meant Andrew is now working from home in his role working for Nestle Ireland, but that also presents challenges as his desk is close to the kitchen press and biscuits.

He has been conscious of his weight for years, and says the last time he was happy with his body was when he was 20 years old and had a 26-inch waistline.

According to RTE, he is currently 14 stone and has a passion for baton twirling, having competed at the highest levels both in Ireland and internationally.

Kathryn Thomas believes Andrew is “a real team player” who can help others and was “so honest” with his own story.

“We need honesty, integrity and somebody who is going to work hard and we felt that you had all of that,” said Kathryn.
