August 2017 Sports Star of the Month – Killian Callaghan
By Stephen Leonard
KILLIAN Callaghan fulfilled his dream of being crowned a world champion after he secured the Under 21 Enduro World Series title with a second place finish in the penultimate round in Whistler, Canada in August.
The Walkinstown competitor has been right across the globe in his bid to land the title, travelling to rounds as far afield as New Zealand, Tasmania, Madeira, France, the USA and Canada.
What’s more, he also delivered the goods when the championship arrived to Wicklow back in May.
Victory in Aspen followed by his runner-up finish in Canada two weeks later proved more than enough to see him over the line in the race for the title with one round to spare.
Callaghan, who finished fourth in this championship last year, was determined to go all the way to the top this time around.
And his achievement is made all the more remarkable given the fact that he does not enjoy the factory backing that many of his main rivals do.
“I’d to build my own team up at the start of the season and at that stage I didn’t even have enough money to get to all the races” explained Callaghan.
