August 2017 Team of the Month – Donore Harriers Women’s National League Team

DONORE Harriers Athletic Club saw their women’s team capture the National League Division One title for the very first time after a string of great performance in last month’s final in Tullamore.

The squad, which included a nice blend of youth and experience, subsequently secured promotion to the top ranks of the competition for next year.

Delighted with the achievement of the squad, team manager Leonie Newman pointed out “26 women competed over the three rounds

“On the day of the final we had an athlete from every training group in the club. Athletes debuted for the club on the track, coming out of their comfort zones and gaining valuable points

“The ages varied from juveniles through to masters and great credit must go to the coaches and a great team of supporters” she added.

Donore finished on 123 points, 27 the better of closest rivals Louth County (96) with Kerry County (89) in third.

Looking ahead to next season, Newman said “We hope to reach the Premier Division Final next year and to challenge for the national title within the next three to five years”.
