Ballyboden ladies are top of the world
By Aideen O'Flaherty
THE LADIES and girls from Ballyboden St Enda’s Gaelic football teams beat a world record on Saturday, where a total of 350 female footballers participated in a continuous football match from sunrise to sunset.
The mammoth match kicked off in Pairc Uí Mhurchú at 8am on Saturday morning, where the women and girls played two or three 15-a-side matches during the day, totalling 24 matches over the course of the event, before the final match ended at 8.30pm.

Girls from the under 9s team all the way up to players on the senior ladies’ team participated in the world record event, where they helped to raise funds for the women’s teams in St Enda’s and also gave a donation to Aoibheann’s Pink Tie National Children’s Cancer Charity.
Cathal O’Toole, the chairperson of Ballyboden St Enda’s Ladies’ Football Committee, said: “While the fundraising is obviously very welcome and appreciated, the day was more about creating memories for the girls with a unique, one-off event.
“With so many distractions and a high drop-off rate in girls’ participation in sport, we wanted the girls to really see how special it was to be involved in Gaelic games and to further see the support their club gives them.”

The women and girls went home wearing white tee-shirts that had ‘Boden Ladies’ Footballers Broke a World Record’ emblazoned on the back, in recognition of their 13-and-half-hour-long feat.
