Boden fall short in senior county final
BALLYBODEN St Enda’s senior ladies football team were pipped at the post in the Senior Ladies Championship final in Fingallians on Sunday evening.
Despite a brave performance from the Firhouse Road side, they finished second best to defending champions Foxrock Cabinteely 1-5 to 1-10 in a thrilling showdown.
Boden were going into this match hoping to win the title for the first time in seven years, while Foxrock were going for three in-a-row.
The opening exchanges set the tone for the match with both sides tackling hard and not giving many scores opportunities away.
Amy Ring opened the scoring with pointed free for Foxrock after a foul on Fiona Claffey before Enda’s were gifted two golden goal opportunities within seconds of each other.
The first arrived when Dee Lawless was fouled in the box after a good run and up stepped Simone Reilly who saw her effort go wide off the post.
From the resulting kick-out, midfielder Sinead Burke won possession and found herself in on goal only to see her effort go wide.
At the other end, Amy Ring was punishing Boden’s defence with two pointed frees which moved Foxrock three points clear.
Boden were creating chances but were not finding the target and soon after they dropped two efforts just short.
Ciara Murphy extended Foxrock’s lead after good play from Sinead Goldrick and Ciara Ní Mhurchadh before Enda’s found the target on 14 minutes through Maria McGrath.
Ciara O’Riordan was on the end of a good move with a point for Foxrock and then the opening goal came after a good move from Goldrick saw the ball bounce in front of Hannah O’Neill and she fired past Elizabeth Cohalan.
Boden replied immediately and Simone Reilly’s shot was misjudged by Laurie Ahern and ended up in the back of the net.
Foxrock finished the first half with the final two points to hand them a five lead at the break.
Boden kicked the first two wides of the second half, however they were punished again at the other end with Amy Ring kicking a score.
The next attack saw Ring see her effort come off the post but the ball was won back and Goldrick chipped over.
Maria McGrath replied with a Boden score and then two further points from Reilly and Claire Kirwan left the contest wide open with 10 minutes plus injury time to play.
Simone Reilly added another Boden point but time beat them as the defending champions went on to secure three-in-a-row.
