THE first artist to be selected from a commissioning process for new sculptures in Dublin, is Breda Marron an award-winning sculptor, whose submission for the Ballyfermot People’s Park was unanimously agreed by the judging panel.

The Dublin City Council initiative Sculpture Dublin has been progressing the commissioning process for six new sculptures that will be created in each of the five local administrative areas.

Artists were asked to propose a sculptural work.

The call for submissions was successful with 143 received for the open competitions, and 27 per cent of those from artists based outside of Ireland.

According to the city council, the standard of submissions received was high and a UK based, external assessor was engaged to assist with the long listing of applications.

The Ballyfermot People’s Park is located beside the Civic Centre and has existed as a green space since the surrounding houses were built in 1955.

Ms Marron will be engaging with the local community over the months ahead to develop an artwork for the new park.

“I am honoured to have been chosen to create a sculpture for the new People’s Park in Ballyfermot and am looking forward to collaborating with the local community and Suzanne O’Connell in Dublin City Council Parks,” said Breda Marron.

“Now, more than ever, our parks and public spaces play a vital role in maintaining our sense of wellbeing.

They are places where we can connect with nature and each other, places where we can build solidarity and resilience in our communities.

“I will make a sculpture for Ballyfermot People’s Park that is informed by the stories, histories and desires of the local people.

Through a collaborative process of listening, making and learning through experimentation, I will create an artwork that aims to capture the spirit of the place in a powerful symbolic gesture.”
