Brennan pleased with Glenanne’s start

GLENANNE Head Coach Joe Brennan has been very encouraged by the start his side has made to their Men’s EY Hockey League title defence.

The Tallaght side will head into a break from the league top of the table, albeit on goal difference after they carded a 3-1 victory over Annadale.

Shannon Boucher twice hit the target while Cedric Jakobi also got on the scoresheet as Glenanne joined Banbridge at the peak of the table on 15 points.

“It was a good performance,” said Brennan. “We could have been a lot more comfortable, but we’re at the top now heading into the break and while the teams below have one or two games in hand, it’s always good to have the points on the board.

“Unfortunately we had three draws against some of the lower teams, games that we would have nailed last season.

“It’s a pity because we would have been out of sight whereas now a couple of the teams can catch us, but the lads will be coming back after the break ready to go.

“Winning the title last season took a lot out of the lads, and it required a big effort mentally to get going again.

“But we have been working on that mental side of the game and we’re still the only team unbeaten in the league.

“To go the whole of last season’s campaign unbeaten until we had won the league was a huge achievement by the lads.

“We have lost the likes of Shane [O’Donoghue] who went back to Belgium and our goalkeeper was missing through injury while Richie Shaw broke his hand and will be out until the new year.

“But some of the young lads have stepped up. Jonny McCormack has come in and done well as have the likes of Brad [Venter] and Cedric [Jakobi],” he said.
