Brightest young minds set for the 60th BT Young Scientist Exhibition
THIS year’s BT Young Scientist Exhibition officially opened in the RDS on Wednesday, January 10, and features a host of local school students who will be showcasing their scientific projects and studies.
Now in its 60th year, the exhibition gives students over 1,000 students from across the country the opportunity to showcase their work, after being shortlisted to take part in the event.
Three exhibitions will be showcased by students from Coláiste Pádraig CBS in Lucan, including a ‘B-Well’ project centre on health and wellbeing.
The two other projects are ‘Developing Genetic Algorithms and Testing their Viability in place of Traditional Neural Networks’ and ‘Gravitational Lensing Simulation Using Python’.
A group of students from Kishoge Community College in Lucan will present their work on a smart facial recognition system for medical settings.
Three projects will be presented by pupils from Our Lady’s School in Templeogue, looking at if Ireland is radioactive, while a project titled ‘Grow beyond your limits’ will look at health and wellbeing.
Their other project is investigating the active components in gooseberry (nelli) extracts that are effective against antibiotic resistant bacteria found in skin diseases.
Two groups from St Colmcille’s Community School in Knocklyon will also present their projects at the exhibition.
Their projects are titled ‘Haemochromatosis – why does Ireland have the highest rate in the world and what can we do about it?’ and ‘Just How Filthy is Your Reusable Water Bottle?’.
A group from Tallaght Community School will present a project titled ‘Mind the gap: unravelling student study habits’.
Speaking ahead of the first day of the exhibition, Mari Cahalane, head of the BT Young Scientist and Technology (BTYSTE) Exhibition, said preparations were in full swing.
“BT Ireland’s team of almost 200 volunteers are working tirelessly at the RDS to get this year’s exhibition ready and are excited for the students, teachers, and partners to see their BTYSTE home for the next few days.
“As we open BTYSTE 2024 and begin to celebrate the exhibition’s 60th edition we look forward to showing our esteemed guest, President Higgins, and the people of Ireland the incredible and diverse projects that the country’s brightest young minds have been working on.”
The BT Young Scientist Exhibition 2024 will be held from January 10, with the winner being announced on the final day of the exhibition, January 13.
