Calls for bonfire materials to be removed

RESIDENTS are urged to contact Dublin City Council if they notice stock piles of bonfire material in the lead-up to Halloween, reports Maurice Garvey.

Last year Dublin City Council removed 441 tonnes of bonfire materials, diverting it from burning on illegal bonfires.

This included the removal of 450 pallets and 300 tyres from one house alone in Drimnagh, after a tip-off in relation to the storage of bonfire material coming up to Halloween 2022.

Speaking at the recent South Central area meeting, Cllr Hazel

De Nortúin (PBP) said there was a number of pallets at a vacant house in Cherry Orchard, which were later dumped out on Cherry Orchard Drive, and asked if the council could start the Halloween process earlier this year.

Bruce Philips, Assistant Area Manager, Dublin City Council, said the council are collecting bonfire material not just in the lead-up to Halloween but throughout the year “and particularly this time of the year.”

The city council said residents can report bonfire material on the citizen’s hub online or call the council directly.

Parks staff will remove material from green spaces and waste management staff remove material from footpaths or public roads.

The city council is also working closely with Dublin Fire Brigade to share information and advice on their respective social media channels.

Last year, a team of 12 people, had to make several trips to the Drimnagh house, such was the volume of pallets and tyres at the property.

Gardai also assisted council staff with intervention at locations across the city, including two sites in Inchicore, and industrial estates in Ballyfermot and Inchicore, where truck loads of pallets and tyres were removed prior to Halloween.

Reports of stockpiled materials can be made to DCC Customer Services at 222 2222 or HERE
