Carjacking attempt leaves mother and son traumatised

A MOTHER and son were left traumatised after an attempted carjacking at Kylemore Road on Sunday (October 1).

The two were sitting in traffic at a junction near the Aldi store at approximately 6pm, when two males got in the back door of the hatchback, and threatened them with a knife.

The son (19), who was in the passenger seat, received a serious knife wound to his wrist trying to defend his mother, before the two thugs escaped empty-handed towards Ballyfermot.

The Echo understands gardai are investigating if the incident is connected to a recent spate of similar attacks on female motorists – with incidents at Cherry Orchard and Park West train stations, and another case in Inchicore, as reported in The Echo (September 21).

Horrified shoppers in the nearby Aldi carpark heard screams, and ran to assist the mother and son.

A local resident, who did not wish to be named, was first responder to the scene.

She said: “I was putting shopping in the car when I heard screaming. I knew the tone of screaming and immediately ran towards the car. At that moment, two lads jumped out of the back seat of the car and ran off.

“I couldn’t believe it for the simple reason that the young son was stabbed. Blood was everywhere, all over him and the car. I thought it was a compound fracture, the bone was jumping out of the wrist. The poor woman was getting in and out of the car, and was in shock. The engine was still running. I think the mother was a doctor, she applied pressure to the wrist, I helped him to keep his arm up.”

The Echo understands the mother and son were of Indian descent, and the two attackers were reported to be between 16 and 18 years of age.

A number of residents in the area came to the assistance of the victims, whilst at least one man gave chase to the suspects, who reportedly escaped after running into Dartmouth House Industrial Estate.

An unmarked garda car was on the scene within minutes, closely followed by Dublin Fire Brigade and an ambulance, which took the mother and son to St James Hospital.

“It could have been a lot worse,” said the first responder.

“It was still bright out at that time. Kylemore Road is always busy. What scared me was we were moments away from the scene in our own car, and both my kids would usually be in the back seat.”

A senior gardai told The Echo they were investigating a suspected high-jacking involving two suspects armed with a knife.

Gardai said the investigations are ongoing, and they have not ruled out the possibility that the same suspects could be behind similar attacks in the area.
