Cash collected by CAB should support policing committees

THE local Joint Policing Committee has requested that a portion of the cash collected by CAB in South Dublin County be diverted back into supporting communities “devastated” by the drugs trade.

At last week’s Joint Policing Committee (JPC) it was agreed that a letter be sent to Government ministers seeking that a portion of CAB cash collected across local communities like Tallaght, Clondalkin, Lucan and Rathfarnham, be diverted back to JPCs – which would use the money to support communities.

The local JPC is a forum where South Dublin County Council, senior Garda officials from local stations and community representatives discuss and make recommendations for policing in the area.

JPC chair and Rathfarnham Independent councillor Deirdre O’ Donovan told The Echo: “The JPCs look at how we can better police communities in conjunction with the council.

“However, as a JPC we currently have no resources which limits the amount of work we can do within our communities, especially those communities devastated by the drugs trade.

“Criminals are making money off our communities and we are the ones to pick up the pieces so it only makes sense that some of the [CAB] funding comes back to us so that we can support community groups fighting the drugs trade.”

She added: “We have CAB agents operating within our county at a local level and it’s a no brainer that some of the proceeds of their work should be going to the communities experiencing drug-related anti-social behaviour, crime and depravation.

“A portion of this cash should be coming back to help heal the communities worst affected by the drugs trade.”

A letter is being sent to the Minister for Justice and Equality, Charlie Flanagan TD and the Minister for Finance and Public Expenditure and Reform, Paschal Donohoe TD.

The South Dublin County JPC is also writing to other JPCs across the country to encourage them to call for similar support for their communities.
