Celebrations in honour of ‘modest marathon man’

A CELEBRATION in honour of Templeogue runner Kevin Sherlock following his 27th and final Dublin Marathon was held recently in the Hole in the Wall pub beside the Phoenix Park.

It was organised by his friends and fellow runners, known as “Kev’s Team”, which took part in the marathon with him last month.

Kevin’s family were also in attendance at the celebration, which took place after 68-year-old Kevin finished his weekly Saturday run in the park.

He started running in 1984, competing in his first marathon that same year. Since 1984, Kevin has taken part in marathons all over the world in Toronto, Beijing, New York, Chicago and Boston.

One of his biggest triumphs took place in 1996 during the Boston marathon, where he sustained a torn hamstring, but still managed to complete the course in just under six hours.

The location for the celebration of his marathon-running journey was chosen due to its proximity to the team’s regular meeting place – the Papal Cross car park in Phoenix Park.

One of his fellow teammates spoke to The Echo following the celebration. They said: “It was brilliant, a really big surprise. It’s really hard to catch Kevin out, so it was hard to believe that he didn’t figure it out beforehand.

“Everybody loves Kevin, and no matter where we went, whether it was in Dublin or New York, he would run into someone he knows or hasn’t met in years.

“He’s been a great support to us all running over the years, so he will be missed at the big marathons. On the day of the race he’d always say the things you needed to hear.

“He’ll still be on the sidelines supporting us. A few years ago he injured himself and couldn’t take part in the marathon – he drove around half of the city, hopping onto the Luas or jumping into a car to catch us during the route and cheer us on.

“Every time Kev’s team meet we see his heart and character inspire us to give more of ourselves, he is the leader of our wonderful team and he takes us where we need to be continuously, sending text messages to all on training days to encourage us out to run, an example of the many gestures.

“Kevin is the reason why we all run and why Kev’s Team was formed, he makes us believe anything is possible.

“He is an inspirational man and friend to us all. He never wishes for recognition for what he does, he is a very modest man and loves to see people enjoying themselves.

“Kevin is our hero and everyone from Kev’s Team cannot thank him enough for all he does for us.”
