Cherry Orchard FC pay fitting tribute to club legend Jem Byrne
Cherry Orchard Football Club have paid a fitting tribute to one of their longest serving volunteers, James (Jem) Byrne who sadly passed away this week after a short illness.
Jem was involved with the Ballyfermot club for most of his life, serving as a manager and coach, but, more importantly, doing the jobs that more often go unnoticed.
From driving players to games to looking after new signings and marking pitches, Jem was forever giving his time to the club he loved.
Living opposite The Lawns, Jem was destined for a life in football, according to club Chairman Tom Kennedy.
In a heartfelt tribute, Mr Kennedy said: “As his family home looks out on to “The Lawn” it was always likely that Jem would be involved with some football club in Ballyfermot.
“Thankfully Jem’s father Kevin was heavily involved with Cherry Orchard in the early days and it was us who were the lucky ones.”
Like any club, the need for volunteers is ongoing, and to have such a reliable and committed member was instrumental in the club’s growth.
“The truth is the difference between a club surviving or ceasing to exist in many cases can be down to one or two individuals and Cherry Orchard are no different,” said the Chairman.
He continued: “The word legend is used far too often these days but in terms of Jem’s contribution to our Club it seems inadequate.
“Every Club needs a person like Jem Byrne but very few are lucky enough to ever have one.”
Jem’s funeral will take place on Friday morning at 10am in St Mathew’s Church in Ballyfermot, followed by a burial in Newland’s Cross Cemetery.
