Chronic dumping blackspot needs to be cleaned up again
By Maurice Garvey
TANDY’S Lane in Lucan will be temporarily closed on Saturday, April 2, to facilitate yet another clean-up at a “chronic fly-tipping blackspot.”
It will be closed from 5am to 12 noon on April 2 by South Dublin County Council in order to facilitate “cleaning and removal of fly-tipped material from roadside verges and ditches.”
The last time the road was temporarily closed to traffic was in April 2015, when over 7.5 tonnes of waste was removed by council staff.
There have been seven complaints regarding illegal dumping at Tandy’s Lane in 2016 – almost half the number of complaints South Dublin County Council received for the road in 2015.
According to the local authority, workers cleaning on Tandy’s Lane are exposed to an “increased occupational risk due to the narrow nature of the roadway.”
To undertake a comprehensive clean-up in safe conditions, it is necessary to close the road to traffic for a limited period of time.
Local representatives requested CCTV cameras, but this was deemed “unsuitable due to the narrow nature of the roadway and number of blind corners”, according to a report delivered by a CCTV contractor to the council.
The council’s Enforcement and Licensing Section received 15 complaints regarding dumping at Tandy’s Lane in 2015. To date in 2016 there have been seven complaints received and investigated.
An alternative route via Tandy’s Lane, Meadowview Grove, Hillcrest Heights, Hillcrest Road and Adamstown Road will be in place on the morning of April 2 – diversion signs will be in place.
