Clubs open up to do free self-defence classes for women

THE woman who fought off a knife wielding attacker in a Clondalkin laneway, has been “overwhelmed” by the willingness of trainers to provide free self-defence classes for women on Saturday, June 23, reports Maurice Garvey.

Ruth Maxwell (46), survived a horrendous attack whilst on her way to work on Knockmeenagh Lane in 2016.

Her case was instrumental in a garda investigation, tying DNA evidence and CCTV footage together to identify her attacker, and secure a conviction against a man for attacks on three women in Clondalkin over a five-year period.

Ruth has enlisted the help of trainers from around the country for the national day, on Saturday, June 23.

“We have Senshido Ireland, Krav Maga Ireland, Brazilian Jui Jitsu, Akido International and their branch in Philadeplhia is taking part too,” said Ruth.

“I’m thrilled with the willingness to participate. Clubs all around the country have agreed to open up and do a class or demonstration that morning. Krav Maga Ireland have agreed to do a free class once a month for the foreseeable future in some of their clubs around the country, as have Senshido Ireland.”

Following the trial of her attacker last month, Ruth was also in talks with Conor McGregor’s trainer John Kavanagh.

Responding to the tragic murder of IT Tallaght student Justine Valdez, Coach Kavanagh has put on free self-defence classes for women on Saturday mornings at his SBG Ireland gym.

Ruth appeared on Ireland AM on Thursday morning with Senshido trainers to do a demonstration ahead of the national event.
