College celebrations mark 50 years of academic excellence
By Theo McDonald
KYLEMORE College celebrated their 50th anniversary in ceremonial style this week with lots of awards, presentations and acknowledgements.
Kylemore College Principal Deirdre Nolan welcomed all guests, traced the development of the school over the last fifty years, and outlined their vision for the future.
This was followed by an address from Jacinta Stewart, CEO, City of Dublin Education Training Board (CDETB).
Presentations were made to nine teachers with long service for their dedication to their students and the school.
The ceremony acknowledged student excellence in academic, sporting and cultural achievements.
And finally, a presentation was made by chairperson and former student Independent councillor Vincent Jackson, who spoke of the unique role the school plays in the community and his pride in the school.
Jacinta Stewart, who was speaking at her final formal engagement as CEO of CDETB, paid tribute to the students and staff for their work in organising the event.
She spoke of her great pride in Kylemore College which she described as an exceptional school saying it has excellent “principals and staff, both academic and administrative.”
Ms Stewart said: “Students from this community are exemplary. They don’t simply get a very good academic grounding in this school – they receive an excellent grounding in cultural and sports activities.
“Kylemore is three schools in one. It serves the community with second level, further and adult education, and serves an even wider community musically. The annual celebrations of Kylemore Music School at the National Concert Hall has been one of my favourite events.”
Staff and students, both past and present, and members of the local community attended the celebration to honour the 50th anniversary.
Awards were also given out to mark students’ sporting achievements – Sean Lawlor, (100/200 metre National Champion) and Jack Kelly (U18 Irish Boxing team).
