Conama ready for World Deaf Golf Championship
JOHN Bosco Conama is preparing to compete in the World Deaf Golf Championships at Carton House in July.
The Lisheen Springs member from Oldcourt secured his place in the competition on the Order of Merit whereby he need-ed to make it under a certain handicap threshold (set by the World Federation of Deaf Golf) following a series of competitions in Ireland.

His handicap of 14.3 last October ensured he was eligible to compete.
Looking forward to the challenge, Conama told The Echo: “I would love to think I can win, but since the competition is based on a scratch basis, it is very unlikely for the likes of me to win outright, but I can do as a team member. We have a very good chance of winning something from there.
“Anyhow, it is a fantastic opportunity to represent your country in a sporting activity. I have been representing Ireland but nothing in sports. It would be a nice change for me,” he added.
The trip to Carton House will mark his first step onto the World Golf Championship stage, but he is confident in his preparation.
“I play regularly for competitions at Lisheen and have a team training provided by GUI at Carton House. It is very useful to receive first-class coaching from GUI appointed coach.
“I have not contested international competitions, but I often played in club competitions and I like to think I do well,” he said.
Taking up the sport about 15 years ago, Conama explained “for a long time I regarded it as a hobby, but in last few years I realised my opportunity had arisen since I turned 50 and can play competitively with my current handicap.”
