Construction to start on Tymon community nursing home

CONSTRUCTION work on a 100-bed nursing home and day-care centre in Tymon North is due to commence in June, The Echo has learned.

The development is planned for an 8,000 sq m site purchased from South Dublin County Council for €650,000 by the HSE, which is building the community nursing home on land beside the scout’s den in Tymon North.

Following a council decision to grant permission, the development was appealed to An Bord Pleanála by Solidarity councillor Mick Murphy, who, concerned over the scale of the project, raised issues around overlooking, parking and the nursing home’s footprint – which Cllr Murphy said was 15 per cent larger than the National Basketball Arena.

However, in January 2016, An Bord Pleanála granted permission for the development.

Labour Party councillor Mick Duff has confirmed to The Echo that the new community nursing home has reached contract stage and that construction is expected to commence in June.

Cllr Duff said: “This is a much welcomed development for Tymon North and indeed the Tallaght Area, bringing as it does, much-needed public nursing beds in a state-of-the-art facility – and on a site that was a local eyesore for many years.

“The project should take two years to complete and in the meantime St Bridget’s in Crooksling will remain open until the Community Nursing Home in Tymon North is completed.

“I have received assurances from the HSE that they will keep the staff, families and the local residents informed as to progress and ensure a smooth transition to this state of the art facility.”

He added: “Both myself and Cllr Charlie O’Connor (Fianna Fáil) have made regular representations to the HSE on the various stages of the development and will continue to monitor the situation during the construction phase on behalf of the local residents and families.

“I welcome this development and hope that it will benefit not only the patients and families that will use it but also the wider community.”
