Couple tackle Storm Emma to tie the knot

A Tallaght couple got more of a white wedding than they bargained for as last weekend’s Storm Emma almost sabotaged their big day.

Kim and Gavin Scully, from Kilnamanagh and Glenview Park beat the odds to make it down the aisle in Wexford last Friday, where they got married in the Amber Springs Hotel in Gorey.

With a national status red warning in place on Thursday (March 1) afternoon, many of Kim and Gavin’s friends and family made the decision to leave Dublin as soon as possible to beat the impending heavy snowfall and risky roads, with some staying in the hotel a night early to ensure they would make the big day.

Kim described the two-day scramble to get to the Gorey resort during the blizzard-like weather conditions as “pandemonium”.

“Everyone was so determined,” Kim (31) told The Echo. “They went  through great lengths to be here.”

She said: “Once I arrived with the convoy of my friends and saw that my family was there, I burst into tears.”

“Our wedding was scheduled for 3pm, but was postponed to 3.30pm. Gavin’s family turned up at 3.10 in full snow gear,” she said. “They almost didn’t make it!”

According to the Scullys, bridesmaid Natasha had to hop over a six-foot wall to reach a nearby car on the Katharine Tynan Road after her own car became stuck in the snow in Kilnamanagh.

“She fell to the floor in relief when she got there. She made it by the skin of her teeth.”

A few guests, however, were unable to attend the ceremony, including the most important guest of all, the registrar.

Luckily the general manager of the Amber Springs, Eibhear Coyle, stepped in to officiate the ceremony.

“He was such a gentleman,” Kim said.

Despite the weather being calm when the guests had arrived on Thursday (March 1), the hotel became snowed-in over the weekend and the guests had to stay in the Amber Springs until Sunday.

“The hotel couldn’t have done more for us,” Gavin (30) said.

The Scullys flew out to Cancun, Mexico on Wednesday for their honeymoon, which fortunately does not have snow on the forecast.
