Cup double for Terenure
TERENURE Rangers were celebrating a double in last weekend’s DDSL Cup Finals after both their Under 13s and Under 14s raised their respective titles.
The former served up a 5-0 drubbing of Finglas Celtic to power their way to the Dublin Bus Cup on Sunday before, soon after, their Under 14 clubmates edged a 2-1 win over Leicester Celtic for the O’Neill’s Cup.
After a tight opening 15 minutes, the Terenure Under 15s took the lead when Tom Whelan broke through and slotted the ball home.
Matt Lynch then doubled their advantage when he let fly from distance into the top left corner, before Whelan made it 3-0 when he flicked the ball over the reach of the opposing goalkeeper.
Finglas, were not about to throw in the towel and would have pulled one back soon after the interval had not goalkeeper Conor Butler pulled of a great save.
Terenure made the most of that reprieve to go four goals up after Whelan completed his hat-trick before Siddhanth Shedgie wrapped up the scoring in this match with a very composed finish.
Meanwhile, Terenure Rangers’ U14 O’Neill’s Cup decider against local rivals Leicester Celtic, proved a lot tougher.
Indeed they fell behind to a well-taken Leicester goal early on but battled back to score a superb equaliser when Gavin Carey rifled his effort home from some 25 yards, leaving the two sides deadlocked at half time.
Rangers goalkeeper Matthew Lydon was in excellent form and he had to be against the dangerous Leicester forwards.
Terenure suffered a setback when influential midfielder John Kelly limped off after 20 minutes, but the moving of Carey into that position afforded him a little more space to crack home the leveller.
Guns blazing
While Leicester started the second half with all guns blazing, it was Rangers who grabbed the decisive goal midway through this period when top scorer Sam Kennedy broke free on the right and played a pin-point ball to the onrushing Shaakir Issah who calmly lifted it over the keeper.
Rangers had a number of chances to add to their total with man-of-the-match Cathal Mutai Murphy going close and Jack Kelly having a header cleared off the line.
Leicester pressed for an equaliser to force extra time and had a good chance late, but the ball flew just over Matthew Lydon’s bar and it was Rangers skipper Eli Van Egeraat who lifted the cup.
With that prize now in the bag, Terenure can now concentrate on the league which they currently top heading into the mid-season break.
