ADRESSING cyclist and pedestrian safety is South Dublin County Council’s reasoning behind the obstacle-course-like bollard formation on Stocking Lane.

As previously reported in The Echo, photographs of this particular bollard formation took Twitter by storm after they appeared to be randomly placed across a bike lane.

Locals were bemused, with many calling for the council to review and remove the installation which was installed in January.

However, stating that it was under review on Twitter, a spokesperson for the council told The Echo that they have “no plans to remove until after a trial period” and that it was installed under “planning compliance” at “no cost to South Dublin County Council”.

“All Council’s need to start thinking in terms of Cyclist and pedestrian safety,” the spokesperson said.

“This is a trial attempt to address the matter. Similar safety zones for consideration will include bus stops.”

Concerns were raised by Cllr Emma Murphy in relation to the difficulty wheelchair users and buggies would have getting through the bollard formation.

The Echo followed up with the council seeking clarity in relation to what the outcome of the review has been, how long the trial period will last and how the bollards on the bike lane at Stocking Lane related to planning compliance.

In their response, the council said: “All these matters were responded to.”
