FORMER Dublin hurling star David ‘Dotsy’ O’Callaghan will be tackling a new challenge away from the pitch as he holds a raffle to raise funds for the Cheshire Children’s Home in Zambia, ahead of a planned visit to the home with Gorta Self-Help Africa this spring.

The Springfield man has a host of prizes up for grabs in the raffle that will appeal to inter-county fans, including a pair of tickets for the All-Ireland Senior Hurling Championships, signed Dublin jerseys, a training session with David, and a Copper Face Jack’s gold card.

The 34-year-old told The Echo that he is determined to reach his target of €10,000, and that he first got involved with the children’s home after being made aware of their work through his friendship with former Galway inter-county hurler Alan Kerins, who is heavily involved in charity work.

David said: “I had met Alan Kerins previously and he had been telling me about Cheshire House.”

He added: “All of the money will be going towards Cheshire House.

“From my point of view, it’s a chance for me to give support and lend a hand.

“It’s something that I’m really happy to be involved in.”

Cheshire Children’s Home has been supporting children with disabilities for over ten years, and there are over 1,200 children with disabilities registered under the care of the home.

The home provides surgical interventions, primarily prosthetic limbs, for the children and care plans are put in place to include nutritional, medical, educational and development goals for each child.

David said: “The money I’m raising is going to make a fairly big impact.

“Getting the opportunity to go over to the home and witness the work that’s being done there will be an eye-opening experience, I’m really looking forward to it.”

The talented sportsman described the children in the home as being “an inspiration” to everyone they meet.

You can support David by donating to his Altruism Ireland fundraising page at https://www.altruism.ie/fundraising_page/david-o-callaghan-fundraising-page-for-gorta-self-help-africa, or by purchasing a raffle ticket.

The draw for the raffle will be held on March 23 in St Mark’s GAA Club in Springfield.
